Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s latest endeavor at seeking election assistance from a foreign country:
“I find it unacceptable that the President of the United States would seek the assistance of a foreign government to benefit his re-election. After repeatedly denying that he would gladly have Russia and other actors aid his election in 2016, the President admitted on national television that he asked a foreign leader for help in efforts to discredit another candidate. Recent media reports state that President Trump also requested his Chief of Staff withhold nearly $400 billion in congressionally-appropriated funds for Ukrainian defense efforts. The withholding of those funds was illegal.
This Congress has no knowledge of contents of the whistleblower’s report. That information needs to be made available to this body for us to conduct proper oversight. Transcripts of the phone call are simply not enough.
The Whistleblower statute states: The Director of National Intelligence shall forward to the Congressional Intelligence Committee the whistleblower complaint that is of credible and urgent concern within seven days. Inspector General Atkinson described this complaint in that exact manner.
It is time for this Congress do the job afforded to them by the U.S. Constitution. Based on the actions of this Administration, it is time to begin a formal impeachment inquiry. I stand by and support Speaker Pelosi in her decision.”
